Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening based intervention that was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the creator of Polyvagal Theory. Using filtered music, the SSP aims to stimulate the vagus nerve indirectly through the auditory system and help regulate the autonomic nervous system—especially the parts involved in social engagement, threat detection, and physiological safety.

Based on Polyvagal Theory, the SSP helps to shift the nervous system out of a state of defense, helps individuals receive cues of safety from the environment, and supports re-tuning of the nervous system for connection. People may experience greater ease within their social relationships, improved emotional control, improvements with auditory and sensory sensitivities, and improved access to executive functions and higher cognitive abilities.

‍More specifically, some potential positive responses may include:

  • ‍greater attention and focus

  • ‍enhanced expressive and receptive language skills

  • ‍reduced anxiety

  • improved physiological regulation

  • ‍increased learning

  • better sleep

  • reduction in pain levels
