Neurofeedback
The Neuroptimal system is one of the leading dynamical models for neurofeedback. Traditional linear models measure EEG activities, identifies “undesirable” patterns, sets specific thresholds, and then rewards the brain when it produces more desired activity. Within linear models, there are measurable targets, expected outcomes, and a greater potential for negative side effects.
Unlike these linear models, Neuroptimal neurofeedback monitors the EEG in real time, detects rapid shifts, briefly interrupts audio/video feedback milliseconds after those shifts, and allows the brain to self-correct. It is metaphorically similar to holding up a “mirror” to your brain about how change happens as it is happening and promotes adaptive change so that your brain becomes more resilient, organized, and flexible. Therefore, it is considered diagnostically agnostic, non-invasive, and has no known undesired side effects. This model aims to allow the brain to change organically and often the changes/shifts are more subtle.
Neuroptimal emphasizes that this is not a medical treatment, but rather a form of training for your brain. You may observe changes in sleep, stress management, physiological regulation, emotional reactivity, executive functioning, bodily awareness, and cognitive flexibility, although this is not an exhaustive list. Results may vary from person to person and session to session, but anytime the brain receives feedback, change is taking place.
