What is EMDR?

Perhaps you have tried other forms of therapy and have not experienced the relief or progress you were hoping for.  EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a helpful alternative. If you are interested, lets further discuss whether this therapy would be an appropriate fit for you.

EMDR is a psychotherapy that was developed by Francine Shapiro in 1989. It is considered one of the most effective treatments for PTSD and trauma and tends to resolve symptoms associated with disturbing life events at an accelerated pace.

EMDR typically uses eye movement, but can also use other forms of bilateral stimulation such as sound, tapping, or pulsation. Together, we will work to identify which memory to target and then you will be asked to hold different aspects of the event in mind while simultaneously experiencing the bilateral stimulation. This facilitates processing of the event, which results in alleviation of distress, relief from negative thoughts/beliefs, and more adaptive ways of thinking. Although EMDR will not make you forget what has happened, the emotions and thoughts related to the event will feel less intense and consuming.
